Go as a day trip from Tokyo, not a base: 4–6 h on foot covers the school, Bannaji and the shrine; add the flower park only in wisteria season.
Ashikaga is a small Tochigi city two hours from Tokyo with an unusually dense walkable core: Japan's oldest Confucian academy, a samurai-era temple compound and a hilltop shrine, all inside 20 minutes on foot. The Ashikaga clan that ran the Muromachi shogunate built here, and the town still trades on textiles and soba. Most travellers see it in a day; the flower park pulls its own separate crowd in late April and early May.

Get around
The old downtown north of the Watarase River is walkable end to end; the river levees are a bike and walking trail. The city bus runs only about four times a day each way (¥200) and is not a sightseeing tool. Taxis from JR Ashikaga cover the flower park and Coco Farm.

Scams and watch-outs
- The city bus is infrequent: do not build a day around it.
- Ashikaga Flower Park admission and opening hours change with the season and peak hard during wisteria bloom: check the official site and buy dated tickets ahead.
- Coco Farm and Winery is in a valley north of town: budget about ¥2,000 each way by taxi from JR Ashikaga.
- Summer is hot and humid; the walk between sights has little shade.
A quiet, low-risk small city; the real issues are summer heat, infrequent buses and the long unlit walk back from the flower park after evening illuminations. Standard Japan precautions apply: 110 police, 119 fire and ambulance.
