The sights of Ashgabat are far apart, built for parades rather than walking, and open at hours that change without notice. The failures are practical: landing with no invitation letter, a night arrival with no pickup, noon in July, and a camera raised at a ministry. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Photography: Never photograph government buildings, checkpoints, military or police, or the airport; ask your guide before raising a camera anywhere uncertain.
- Dress: Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is expected, particularly at mosques and official sites.
- Greetings: A handshake is standard between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand.
- Officials: Comply calmly with police and security instructions; do not photograph or argue with them.
Red lines
- Do not photograph government buildings, ministries, presidential palaces, military or police, or the airport.
- Do not walk on marble squares that are cordoned off; ask before stepping onto ceremonial areas.
- Do not carry a drone or long lens; declare electronics if asked at customs.
Scams and watch-outs
- There is little street-level tourist scamming in Ashgabat given how few independent tourists there are; the real risks are bureaucratic (an invalid invitation letter, an expired registration slip) rather than a bad-faith vendor.
- Unofficial money-changers offering a much better rate than a bank: avoid — currency rules are strict and enforcement is real.
- A taxi without a fare agreed up front can round up the price at the end: agree the amount, or let your operator arrange the car.
