Asheboro
Asheboro, North Carolina
Go for one full day at the North Carolina Zoo, sleep one night on Dixie Drive, and skip Asheboro as a base unless you add Seagrove pottery.
Asheboro is a small Piedmont Triad town of about 27,000 people, 30 minutes south of Greensboro by Interstate 73, and it exists on the traveller's map for one reason: the North Carolina Zoo, one of the largest natural-habitat zoos in the world. Downtown is a two-hour stroll of antique shops and bakeries. Almost every hotel sits on Dixie Drive (US 64). Most visitors come for a zoo day and either sleep one night here or stay in Greensboro and drive down.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Zoo last admission is one hour before closing; arrive by early afternoon or you will not see both halves.
- Summer heat and humidity: carry water, the zoo circuit is long and exposed.
- Most hotels sit on Dixie Drive, not downtown — check the address before booking if you want to walk to dinner.
- Sunday closures are common at small local restaurants; confirm before you drive.
Asheboro is a low-risk small town; the real hazards are highway driving on I-73/US 64, summer heat on the zoo circuit, and unlit rural roads after dark.
