Arusha
Arusha is a one-night safari base: land at Kilimanjaro, sleep in Arusha, do the clock tower, museum and market before your operator picks you up, and do not plan a long stay here.
Arusha is a busy, dusty highland town at about 1,400 m where most safari and Kilimanjaro trips start. The centre is compact but noisy, with heavy traffic, touts and no ride-hailing that you can rely on. Four walking areas cover a first day; the parks are separate multi-day trips arranged before you arrive.

Etiquette
- Greetings: A greeting before a question is expected, even a short one; jumping straight to 'how much' can read as abrupt.
- Dress: Cover shoulders and knees in the market, at cultural sites and around religious buildings.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people, especially Maasai traders and market vendors; a photo may come with an expected small payment or purchase.
- Tipping: Not expected at chai stalls; round up drivers; safari guides and camp staff are tipped separately at the end of a trip.
- Bargaining: Haggle at craft and curio stalls with a smile; do not haggle over food prices at a stall with a posted board.
- Public behaviour: Same-sex public affection is best avoided given local law; otherwise dress and behaviour expectations are relaxed outside markets and religious sites.

- A 'flat tyre' or 'road closed' story from an unlicensed driver who then offers a different, pricier vehicle: agree transport and price with your hotel or operator in advance.
- Fake or duplicate tanzanite: buy only from licensed dealers who provide a certificate, never from a street seller.
