Arrowtown
Give Arrowtown half a day plus one night, or a 20-min day trip from Queenstown; two nights only if you ski or walk the trails.
Arrowtown is a preserved 1860s gold-mining village 20 min from Queenstown, at the edge of the Wakatipu Basin. One historic main street, a Chinese miners' settlement and river trails fill a half day; the rest of the appeal is a quieter, cheaper base for the Queenstown-Lakes region and the ski fields.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Parking on Buckingham Street fills by mid-morning in autumn and ski season; use the signed village car parks.
- The Macetown 4WD track has many river crossings and is not a casual drive; go with an operator or on a bike.
- Mountain weather changes fast: carry a layer on the Tobin's Track and Sawpit Gully walks.
- Most kitchens stop serving by about 21:00; the pub is the late option.
Very safe for a village of its size; the real risks are cold river water, fast-changing mountain weather on the trails and unsealed 4WD tracks.
