Arnprior is a town of about 9,000 on the Madawaska and Ottawa rivers, 45 km northwest of Ottawa on Highway 417. It is the western gateway to the Upper Ottawa Valley and a working stop rather than a destination: the old-growth pines at Gillies Grove, the riverfront beach and a small museum fill an afternoon. Most travellers pass through on the way to Pembroke, Petawawa or Algonquin, or use it as a cheap bed outside Ottawa.

Get around
No public transit in town. Walk the compact centre (museum, library, bistro, ale house are within 10 minutes of each other). Taxis cover the motel strip and the park. A car is needed for Gillies Grove, Fitzroy and the Antrim Truck Stop; Highway 417 runs to Ottawa in about 45 min.
