Armidale sits at about 980 m on the Northern Tablelands, the highest city in Australia, halfway along the New England Highway between Sydney and Brisbane. The centre is compact and walkable, with colonial-era churches, a regional art museum and a university campus on the edge of town. Get around
The historic centre is small enough to cover on foot in about 2 hours. The university and the New England Regional Art Museum are on the outskirts, so a car is the practical option for the gorges, Saumarez Homestead and Waterfall Way.
