Useful apps for Armenia: transport, maps, translation

Set up the essentials on hotel Wi-Fi before you need them. Yandex Go covers Yerevan well and is the default for most visitors; GG taxi is the local alternative. Both need a phone number for the verification code, so install and register before you switch SIMs or while your home number still works. Outside Yerevan, drivers are fewer and waits longer, so for day-trips to Garni, Geghard or Lake Sevan, arrange a car and driver rather than relying on an app.

Google Maps handles Yerevan streets and main highways, but rural addresses are often missing or placed loosely. Download the offline map for your region before you leave the city, and treat pin positions outside towns as approximate. Yandex Maps is a common local alternative and sometimes has better detail on smaller roads.

For money, keep your bank's app installed with travel notifications on, and carry some dram in cash. Cards work in Yerevan hotels, supermarkets and many restaurants, but smaller guesthouses, marshrutka drivers and village shops are cash-first. See the currency and cards pages for the mechanics.

Language is the other gap. English is common in Yerevan hospitality but less so in villages and among older drivers, so a translation app with offline Armenian and Russian packs is worth the download. Russian is widely understood as a second language, which often gets you further than English outside the capital.
