Armenia on a budget: daily costs and money-saving tips

The budget decision in Armenia is mostly a transport decision. Yerevan is walkable and cheap to eat in, so a day that stays inside the city can land near the bottom of the backpacker band. A day that reaches Garni, Geghard, Lake Sevan or Tatev needs wheels, and that is where the money goes: a private driver day costs AMD 25,000–50,000, so travel in a group of three or four and the per-person cost drops to something a marshrutka cannot beat on comfort.

Marshrutkas (shared minivans) are the cheapest way between towns and leave from Yerevan's bus stations when full. They are slow, cramped and often have no fixed timetable, so build slack into the day. Ride-hailing apps such as Yandex Go and GG show the fare upfront inside Yerevan and remove the need to negotiate; outside the city, agree the price before you get in.

Sleep is the second lever. A hostel dorm in Yerevan runs AMD 5,000–10,000; a guesthouse room outside the capital can cost about the same for two people, which makes Gyumri, Dilijan, Alaverdi and Yeghegnadzor better value than staying in Yerevan and commuting. Book direct or by message where you can; smaller places often prefer it.

Food is the easy saving. Lahmajun or shawarma costs AMD 800–2,000, a khorovats plate AMD 3,500–7,000, and a glass of Armenian wine AMD 1,500–3,500. Supermarkets, bakeries and the produce stalls in Yerevan's markets cut the food line further. Yerevan prices rose sharply after 2022 with the arrival of many foreign residents, so treat older figures you find online as too low.

Sights are rarely the problem: Garni temple entry is about AMD 1,500 and the Wings of Tatev return about AMD 7,000–8,000, both check. Museums and churches are cheap or free. The real risk to a budget is a fixed tour every day; pick one or two big excursions and keep the rest of the trip local.

Change money at city exchange booths rather than the airport and compare the buy and sell rates before handing over notes. Cards are widely accepted in Yerevan, but carry cash for taxis, markets, small cafés and anything outside the city.

Travel in a small group whenever you hire a car, and share the cost of the long runs south and east. Ask your guesthouse to arrange the driver; the price is usually the same and the route knowledge is better.

Eat your main meal at lunch, when many places charge less than at dinner, and buy breakfast from a bakery. Fill a bottle at public fountains where you see them; Yerevan's drinking water is generally treated, but check locally outside the city.

Avoid the temptation to book a packaged tour for every day. One driver day plus marshrutkas and city walking covers most first trips. If you are travelling in winter, check whether mountain roads and some guesthouses are open before you commit.
