Arkhangelsk is the port that traded with Europe before St Petersburg existed, 1,250 km north of Moscow on the Northern Dvina. Most travellers pass through on the way to Solovetsky Islands, but the wooden-street core, the river embankment and the Malye Korely open-air museum justify two nights. It is a Russian North city: short summer light, long dark winters, cheap taxis, almost no English.
