Arica sits at Chile's far north, a port town of about 223,000 with almost no rain and sun most days. It is the gateway to Peru and Bolivia, and the base for the Chinchorro mummy sites, the Azapa Valley and Lauca National Park. Two nights covers the city; three if you add a high-altitude day trip.

Arica is generally calm and safe for visitors; the real issues are cold ocean water, strong sun, unlicensed taxis at night and altitude on day trips inland. Use radio taxis after dark and keep valuables out of sight on the beaches.
