Ardrossan
Go for one night if you want jetty crabbing and a quiet beach town, about 90 minutes from Adelaide; skip it as a base — the peninsula's sights are elsewhere.
Ardrossan is a small coastal town on the eastern side of Yorke Peninsula, proclaimed in 1873 and named after Ardrossan in Ayrshire, Scotland. It is a working town with a jetty, a heritage museum built around the Stump Jump Plough story, and some of the easiest blue swimmer crab fishing on the peninsula. There is no public transport, so a car is the only practical way in. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop or a day trip from Adelaide rather than a multi-day base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport to Ardrossan: without a car you cannot get here.
- Mobile coverage is patchy away from town and along the coast; Telstra and Optus are the most reliable networks.
- Crabbing is best in months with an 'r' in them, when the water is warmer.
- Fuel and food in town are limited: fill up at Port Wakefield or Minlaton before you rely on it.
A quiet, low-crime country town. The real risks are long drives on rural roads at dusk (kangaroos and emus), patchy mobile coverage, and swimming or crabbing alone off the jetty.
