Ardmore, County Waterford
Aird Mhór
Give Ardmore one night, two at most: the round tower, cathedral ruins and cliff walk take half a day, the beaches the rest. No car needed in the village.
Ardmore is a village of under 500 people on a sheltered south-facing bay in west County Waterford, with a 12th-century round tower and ruined cathedral on the hill above it. Everything — beach, cliffs, pubs, both hotels — sits within a 15-minute walk. It works as a one-night stop on the road between Waterford and Cork, or as a slow two-night base for the beaches and the cliff path. Without a car you depend on the Local Link bus from Youghal and Dungarvan.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, first names quickly; avoid: Over-formality; it reads as coldness
- Conversation: Banter, weather and sport; self-deprecating humour; avoid: Opening with Northern Ireland, religion or the Famine
- Pubs: Buy your round; chat at the bar; avoid: Leaving a round without buying one
- Identity: Say Ireland, or the Republic when you need to distinguish; avoid: 'Southern Ireland' and calling it British
- Driving: Lift a finger from the wheel to thank drivers who pull in for you; avoid: Stopping on narrow bends for photos
Scams and watch-outs
- No taxi in the village: if you arrive by bus, plan to walk or arrange a lift.
- Sea swimming and beach water quality can be affected by agricultural run-off after heavy rain; check local notices.
- The cliff path has unfenced edges and is slippery when wet; keep back from the rim.
- The Samson wreck is collapsing — do not climb on it.
- Ardo House and McKenna's Castle are on private land: view from the lane or clifftop only.
- Many cafés and restaurants run shorter hours or close outside summer; check before you rely on them.
Very safe for a village of this size; the real risks are the sea and the cliffs — unfenced edges, cold water and no lifeguard outside summer — plus dark, unlit lanes at night.
