Ararat
Give Ararat one night as a Grampians gateway: J Ward and the lookouts in an afternoon, then push on to Halls Gap or Horsham the next morning.
Ararat is a wheat and wool town of about 8,300 people on the Western Highway, 200 km northwest of Melbourne and the last real stop before the Grampians. Its draw is a dark one: J Ward, the old ward for the criminally insane, plus two hill lookouts and a small gold-era wine district at Great Western. Most travellers use it as a night between Melbourne and Halls Gap rather than a destination in itself.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. J Ward sits uphill on the western edge, about a 20-minute walk from Barkly Street, so a car or taxi saves time in summer. For the lookouts, Great Western and the Grampians you need your own vehicle; there is no local bus network worth planning around.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 °C: do J Ward and the lookouts before 11:00 or after 17:00.
- Kangaroos and deer on the Western Highway and Pyrenees Highway at dawn and dusk.
- Rural mobile coverage drops between Ararat and Halls Gap; download offline maps.
- Some cellar doors at Great Western open only on weekends or by appointment: check ahead.
Ararat is a quiet country town and violent crime is rare. The real risks are heat in summer, wildlife on the highway at dawn and dusk, and long empty stretches of road with no phone signal.
