Aptos

Give Aptos one full day and sleep one night if you want the redwoods and the beach without Santa Cruz crowds; otherwise day-trip from Santa Cruz or Capitola.

Aptos is a small unincorporated coastal town on Monterey Bay, 7 mi (11 km) south of Santa Cruz and 7 mi north of Watsonville on Highway 1. It splits into three parts: Aptos Village inland, Rio del Mar and Seacliff on the water, and the redwood canyon of The Forest of Nisene Marks above the village. One day covers the beach and the redwoods; a second day is for slow mornings, a longer hike or a meal at one of the better restaurants on this stretch of coast.

Get around

A car is the practical choice: the village, the beaches and the state park are 2–5 mi apart and Highway 1 exits (State Park Drive, Rio del Mar Blvd, Freedom Blvd) are how you move between them. Santa Cruz Metro buses run along the Soquel Drive/Highway 1 corridor between Santa Cruz and Watsonville and stop in Aptos, but service is infrequent and slow for sightseeing — check current routes and times. Parking at Seacliff State Beach and Nisene Marks is paid (check current fees) and can fill on summer weekends; arrive before 10:00.

Aptos is a quiet coastal town and generally feels safe; the real risks are ocean conditions (cold water, rip currents, uneven lifeguard coverage — check conditions and posted warnings before swimming), unmarked redwood trails, and summer parking tickets.
