Appi Kogen

Go for 2–3 nights if you ski or want a cool summer base; skip if you want a town, nightlife or cheap food — it is one resort complex.
Appi Kogen is one of Japan's largest ski resorts: 16 lifts, about 45 km of trails across two mountains, and heavy snow that usually keeps the season running into early May. It sits in Iwate, about 2.5 hours by Shinkansen from Tokyo to Morioka plus a bus or train onward. The resort is self-contained and spread out, so most people stay on site and eat there. Summer is cool and quiet, with golf and hiking.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- No taxis at Appi Kogen station: book a hotel pickup or time the shuttle before you arrive.
- Trains from Morioka use private Iwate Galaxy Railway tracks, so Japan Rail and Seishun 18 passes are not valid; the JR East Pass is.
- Lift tickets are tiered and priced by pass type: check the resort site for the current season's rates before you buy.
- Resort restaurants are the only easy option at night and many close by early evening; plan dinner or book a meal plan.
- Winter daytime highs sit around -2°C to -5°C and exposed slopes are colder: proper layers, gloves and goggles are not optional.
Very safe for tourists. The real risks are winter driving on Route 282, deep snow off-piste, and altitude cold on exposed slopes — carry a charged phone and tell someone your plan.
