Go for half a day from Denizli or Pamukkale, or sleep one night in Geyre: 2–3 h on site, no town, no station, car or taxi needed.

Aphrodisias is a Roman city in inland Caria, built on its own marble quarry and named for Aphrodite. It is a UNESCO site with a stadium, temple, tetrapylon and bathhouses, and it sits beside the village of Geyre, 2 km from the gate. There is no rail and no inter-city bus stop, so most visitors come by car, taxi or dolmuş from Denizli, Nazilli or Pamukkale. The site takes 2–3 hours; the museum has been closed for restoration, so check before you build a day around it.

Get around

Drive or be driven: the site is on the D585 between Nazilli and Tavas, with parking at the gate and at the village crossroads. From Denizli or Pamukkale, circle the mountain south via Tavas, not north via Nazilli. Dolmuş services run on this road but are infrequent; ask for dörtyol, the crossroads at the site entrance, not Geyre village. A taxi hired for the day from Denizli removes the wait and the worry about the last connection. Inside the site the paths are in good repair and walkable in ordinary shoes.

  • Inland summer heat: carry water, there is little shade on the stadium and agora.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on the approach roads; download an offline map.

A quiet rural site; the real risks are the unlit 2 km road walk from Geyre, summer heat and the last dolmuş of the day. Carry cash for the ticket and for food, and agree a taxi return time before you start.
