Apeldoorn is a green, spread-out city on the western edge of the Veluwe, about an hour by train from Amsterdam and Schiphol. Its draw is the 17th-century Paleis Het Loo, the Apenheul primate park and direct access to forest and heath. The shopping centre is ordinary; the north-west quarter holds most of the sights. One or two nights covers it, more if you want to walk or cycle the Veluwe.

Get around
Local buses meet at the railway station and connect at :16 and :46, with extra services at :01 and :31 on most lines during the day. Bus 16 runs to the western attractions in tourist season. Rent a bike at the station with an OV-chipkaart, or from shops in town; the woods start about 20 minutes' ride from the centre. The centre itself is walkable.
