Apalit
Give Apalit a half-day: the 19th-century church, the municipal hall park and a market lunch, then move on — it is not a base for Pampanga.
Apalit is one of Pampanga's oldest towns, founded by the Spanish in 1582, and sits where the Pampanga River meets the old Candaba Swamp trade route. It is a working commercial town on MacArthur Highway, not a resort: a Spanish-era church, a municipal hall built as a copy of the back of the White House, ancestral houses in Sulipan, and the Apung Iru river festival on 28–30 June. Half a day covers it.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Smile, handshake; 'po' to elders; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Beckoning: Palm down, wave; avoid: Palm up (used for animals)
- Invitations: Accept food offered or decline politely; avoid: Refusing bluntly
- Time: Expect 'Filipino time' socially; avoid: Lateness for flights and boats
- Churches: Covered clothes; avoid: Loud tours during Mass
Scams and watch-outs
- Low-lying town: flooding is possible in the rainy season and during typhoons.
- No trains: the old line closed in 1988 and the Manila–Clark railway is still under construction as of 2026, with an Apalit station being built near Apalit-Macabebe-Masantol Road in Barangay San Vicente.
- NLEX passes through town but has no dedicated Apalit exit; drivers leave at Pulilan or San Simon and come in on MacArthur Highway.
Fine for a daytime visit. The real risk is water: Apalit is low-lying and floods in heavy rain and typhoons, so check the forecast before you commit to a river-side stop.
