Give Aomori one night as a Tohoku stop: Nebuta festival, the Wa Rasse museum and the nokkedon market, then move on to Hirosaki or Hachinohe.
Aomori sits on Mutsu Bay at the top of Honshu, 3.5–4 h from Tokyo by Shinkansen to Shin-Aomori plus a short hop to the central station. The city itself is a one-night stop — the Nebuta festival in early August, the Wa Rasse museum, the Hakkōda-maru ferry museum and the nokkedon seafood market. Most travellers pair it with Hirosaki, Hachinohe or a ferry to Hakodate.

Get around
The centre (Shinmachi, the station, the bayfront) is walkable. City buses leave from the terminal outside Aomori Station and you pay on exit; the Nebutan-go loop bus circles the station, Shin-Aomori and the art museum about hourly, ¥200 a ride or ¥500 a day. Trains link Aomori and Shin-Aomori; taxis wait at the station.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Shin-Aomori is the Shinkansen stop, not Aomori Station: allow 15–20 min for the transfer, or take the bus.
- Winter brings heavy snow and closed roads; the Hakkōda Ropeway and mountain roads can shut at short notice.
- Nebuta week (2–7 Aug) sells out beds and doubles some prices: book weeks ahead.
- Some small restaurants and the nokkedon market close one day a week: check before you go.
Aomori is a low-crime city; the real risks are winter snow and ice, closed mountain roads and Nebuta-week crowds. Carry cash for small restaurants and the market.
