Anyer

Go for 1–2 nights if you want a Jakarta-easy beach with a Krakatoa boat trip; skip if you want clear water or quiet — weekends double prices.

Anyer is the closest beach strip to Jakarta: a 2–3 h drive west along the coast of Banten, on the Sunda Strait facing Krakatoa. It is a domestic-weekend resort town, not a tropical postcard — sand is grey-brown, the coast road is busy with trucks, and hotel rates roughly double on Saturday nights. Come midweek for 1–2 nights, use it as a base for a boat to Anak Krakatoa, and treat the lighthouse and the Great Post Road kilometre zero as the sightseeing. If you want better beaches, continue south to Carita or Sawarna.

Get around

Silver angkot minivans run the coast road from Cilegon south through Anyer towards Carita (about Rp5,000–10,000 per hop). For beaches, resorts and the lighthouse, rent a car with driver or a scooter, or take an ojek; distances along the strip are 3–10 km and walking on the coast road is unpleasant.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Weekend and holiday rates at resorts can be double the midweek price — book ahead for Fri–Sun.
  • Roads to some beaches have potholes and can flood after heavy rain; trucks use the coast road.
  • The Sunda Strait crossing to Krakatoa is open water: trips are cancelled in high waves, and Dec–Feb is the roughest period.
  • Anyer sits in the Krakatoa tsunami zone — if you feel a strong quake or the sea withdraws, move inland and uphill immediately.
  • Swim only where locals swim; there are no lifeguards on most stretches and currents can be strong.

Low crime, real natural hazards: strong currents and no lifeguards, potholed and flooded coast roads, and the Sunda Strait tsunami zone. Keep cash for stalls, use a car at night, and check sea conditions before any boat trip.
