Where to stay in Antigua and Barbuda: best areas and types of hotel

Choose your base by what you want to do, not by hotel brand. The north-west coast around St John's puts you near the capital, the market and the calmest swimming beaches, with the widest choice of resorts and guesthouses. English Harbour and Falmouth suit sailors, diners and anyone who wants the Dockyard and Shirley Heights on the doorstep. Barbuda is for people who want near-empty beaches and frigate birds, and works as a day trip or a short overnight.

Antigua is small enough that a single base covers most of the island. Two bases only make sense if you want both resort ease and harbour life, or if you are adding Barbuda.

The north-west is the default for first-timers. St John's has the market, museum and ferry links, while the beaches north and west of it hold most of the large resorts, all-inclusives and mid-range hotels. Water is generally calm, and you are within a short drive of the airport.

English Harbour and neighbouring Falmouth are the second base. This is the sailing and dining end of the island, with the restored Dockyard and Shirley Heights above it. Accommodation here leans to boutique hotels, apartments and villas rather than big resorts, and it is busier in the sailing season.

Barbuda is a different trip: a flat, sparsely built island with long pink and white beaches and the frigate bird colony. Accommodation is limited and simple, so most visitors come for a day or one or two nights rather than a full week.

Outside these areas, villas and small guesthouses are scattered along the coast and in the hills. They suit longer stays and groups, but you will need a car and a temporary driving permit.

Prices are 2026 estimates and vary sharply by season and by whether meals and drinks are included. All-inclusive resorts quote a single nightly rate that covers food and most drinks; independent hotels and guesthouses charge room-only, so add meals and taxis.

The Eastern Caribbean dollar is fixed at 2.70 to the US dollar, and US dollars are widely accepted, which makes budgeting straightforward for US visitors. Check whether your rate includes the government accommodation tax and service charge before comparing properties.

December to May is peak season, and the best-located rooms sell out first. For Christmas, New Year and major sailing dates, book 4–6 months ahead. For January to April, 2–4 months is usually enough. For June to November, you can often book weeks ahead and negotiate, but this is hurricane season: buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption and check the cancellation terms carefully.

If your dates are fixed around a sailing event or a holiday week, treat accommodation as the first thing you book, before flights.

Antigua and Barbuda uses types A, B and G plugs at 230 V, and many hotels also provide 110 V outlets, so check before packing adapters. English is the official language, and the local creole is used in everyday speech.

Driving is on the left, and you need a local temporary permit, usually arranged through your car hire company. Taxis are metered by zone rather than by meter, so agree the fare before you set off.
