Antigonish
Antigonish is an optional one-night stop on the Halifax–Cape Breton drive: walk Main Street, see the StFX campus and cathedral, then move on. Two hours is enough for the centre.
Antigonish is a small university and hospital town on the Trans-Canada Highway in Nova Scotia's Northumberland Shore, about 60 km east of New Glasgow and 120 km east of Truro. It is a service stop, not a destination: the campus of St. Francis Xavier University, St Ninian's Cathedral and a short main street fill an afternoon. Most travellers sleep one night here on the way to Cape Breton, or stop for two hours on the drive.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Community Transit is a single weekday route with limited hours: do not plan an evening or Sunday trip on it.
- Many seasonal businesses and some restaurants close or cut hours from November to April.
- Highway 104 is a divided highway with fast traffic; the town exits are easy to miss in rain or fog.
- Summer accommodation fills during the Highland Games and university events: book ahead.
A quiet, low-crime town. The real risks are highway driving, winter ice and fog, and long gaps between services on the surrounding rural roads.
