Anlong Veng
អន្លង់វែង
Go only if Khmer Rouge history or the border crossing is your reason: one night, a half-day moto circuit, then move on.
Anlong Veng is a small crossroads town in Oddar Meanchey, 2 hours from Siem Reap on sealed Highway 67 and 13 km from the Choam–Chong Sa-Ngam border with Thailand. Its draw is late Khmer Rouge history: the graves and ruined houses of Pol Pot and Ta Mok, plus a man-made lake. The sites are spread over about 14 km of road and hill, so you need a moto driver, not a walking plan. Most travellers pass through in a night.

- Head and feet: Keep feet down and pointed away from people and Buddha images; avoid: Touching heads, even children's
- Temples: Shoes and hat off inside, shoulders and knees covered; avoid: Sitting with feet toward the Buddha; women touching monks

Scams and watch-outs
- Landmine signs line the hill roads to Pol Pot's house and Ta Mok's mountain house. Stay on the road and on well-worn paths; never cut across fields or jungle.
- There were Cambodian–Thai border skirmishes in 2025. Check your government's travel advice and the crossing status before travelling within 50 km of the border.
- The Choam–Chong Sa-Ngam crossing is reported open to foreigners 07:00–20:00, but confirm it is operating before you commit to an overland leg.
- The ACLeda ATM east of the roundabout has accepted Visa only; bring enough US dollar cash for the whole stay.
- No hospital of note: serious medical cases go to Siem Reap. Carry your own basic medicine.
- Guesthouse prices are negotiable and quality varies; see the room before you pay.
Low street crime, high landmine risk off the road. Stay on sealed roads and worn paths in the hills, keep cash for the whole stay, and check border and travel advice before any Choam leg.
