Anjuna is a north Goa village built around a beach, a Wednesday flea market and a party reputation that no longer matches reality — police shut down most outdoor parties. It works as a 3-night base for north Goa: cheap rooms, scooter hire, and Mapusa 8 km inland for buses and trains. The beach itself is not Goa's best; the draw is the market, the shacks and the proximity to Vagator and Chapora.

Etiquette
- Greeting: Namaste (palms together) or a handshake between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand; avoid: Hugging or kissing strangers
- Hands and feet: Give and eat with the right hand; apologise if your foot touches someone; avoid: Pointing feet at people or shrines; touching books or food with your feet
- Temples: Shoes off, walk clockwise around shrines, accept prasad (blessed food) with the right hand; avoid: Leather in Jain temples; entering sanctums that say Hindus only
- Home visit: Bring sweets or fruit; accept tea at least once; avoid: Refusing all food; wearing shoes inside

Scams and watch-outs
- Helmets are rarely worn locally, but police fine riders without one — and without an international driving licence — on the Mapusa and Panaji roads. Carry both.
- Do not leave your passport as a scooter deposit; a photocopy is enough.
- Outdoor parties are frequently shut down by police; do not build a trip around one. Ask at Nine Bar in Vagator what is actually on.
- Roads have wandering dogs, goats and cows, and some surfaces are broken up. Do not learn to ride a scooter here.
- The Wednesday flea market causes serious traffic in south Anjuna; go early, rest at midday, return late afternoon.
- Haggling is expected at the flea market and beach stalls; quoted prices are not fixed.
Anjuna is relaxed but not risk-free: the real issues are scooter accidents (no helmet, no licence, no insurance), unlicensed taxis quoting high, and beach shacks with no posted prices. Agree fares and totals before you commit, and keep valuables out of sight on the beach.
