Angangueo
Go for one night in butterfly season (Nov–Mar): El Rosario sanctuary is 1 h from town, and a half-day there is the whole trip.
Angangueo is a small high-altitude mining town in Michoacán, about 2,600 m up, and the closest base to El Rosario, the busiest entrance to the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. The town itself takes an hour to walk; the butterflies take half a day. One night is enough, and only between November and March, when the colonies are in the oyamel firs.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude about 2,600 m: sleep the first night before hiking to the colonies.
- Nights from Nov to Feb can drop below 0 °C; the reserve trail is cold and often muddy.
- The reserve is a protected area: stay on marked paths, no touching butterflies, no drones, no litter.
- Carry cash; cards are not accepted everywhere in town.
The town is small and calm, and the main risk is the altitude (about 2,600 m) plus cold, wet trails at the reserve. Use a licensed guide at the sanctuary, keep to marked paths, and treat the Monarch Reserve as a protected area: no touching butterflies, no drones, no litter. Check road conditions after heavy rain, and carry cash — cards are not accepted everywhere.
