Andria
Half a day for Castel del Monte, plus a walk through the old town. One night if you want to eat well and see the cathedral crypt. Skip if you only have time for Trani or Barletta.
Andria is the fourth-largest town in Puglia and the gateway to Castel del Monte, the 13th-century octagonal fortress built by Frederick II and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The old town has a 12th-century cathedral with a 7th-century crypt, a few palazzi and a clock tower. Most travellers use it as a base for Castel del Monte or a lunch stop between Bari and the Gargano.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- Castel del Monte bus timetables are unreliable: check at the tourist office or drive.
- The cathedral crypt may close for services; visit mid-morning.
- ZTL (limited traffic zone) in the historic centre; park outside and walk.
Andria is a safe town. Watch for pickpockets in the market area and at Castel del Monte in summer. The ZTL cameras are active; don't drive into the historic centre without a permit.
