Andratx
Base in Port d'Andratx or Sant Elm for 2–3 nights with a car; skip the inland town as a base and skip Camp de Mar unless you want a big resort.
Andratx is the southwest tip of the Serra de Tramuntana: an inland town with the town hall in a 16th-century castle, a working harbour at Port d'Andratx, one sandy beach at Camp de Mar and a small harbour at Sant Elm. The coast is rocky, the villages are 5–10 km apart and buses are hourly, so a car changes what you can do. Two or three nights covers the area; the port is the best base for eating, and the GR 221 long-distance trail starts at Port d'Andratx and runs nine stages along the northwest coast to Pollença — the La Trapa monastery hike is reached from Sant Elm, 4 km north.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek (right then left) between friends and when introduced socially; handshake in business; avoid: Being stiff — Spaniards stand close and touch arms
- Meal times: Late lunch and dinner; long sobremesa (chat after eating); avoid: Rushing to leave or asking for the bill with the last bite
- Noise: Join in the lively conversation; avoid: Reading loud voices as anger
- Siesta hours: Keep noise down in residential buildings 15:00–17:00 and after 23:00; avoid: Phone calls to people at lunch time
- Dress: Smart casual in cities; locals rarely wear shorts in Madrid in town; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Regional pride: Ask about local dishes and festivals; avoid: Assuming Catalan or Basque are dialects of Spanish
Scams and watch-outs
- Buses are hourly and stop early; check the last return before you go out.
- The coast is rocky: most swimming is off rocks or ladders, not sand.
- Parking in Port d'Andratx fills up in summer evenings.
- Many restaurants and hotels close from November to March; check before booking winter.
- The GR 221 stages are long and exposed: carry water and start early.
Resort area with a low-key feel; the real risks are summer heat, rocky swimming spots with no lifeguard, and winding Ma-10 mountain roads — drive sober and slowly.
