Anagni
Half a day to see the cathedral crypt and walk the medieval centre; skip if you are short on time between Rome and Naples.
Anagni is a medieval hill town 60 km south of Rome, best known for its Romanesque cathedral and the 1303 attack on Pope Boniface VIII. The main sight is the crypt with Byzantine frescoes; the rest of the town can be seen in a couple of hours. Most travellers pass through on the A1 highway; a stop of half a day is enough.
