First time in AmsterdamAmsterdam
Amsterdam is a timed-ticket city: book the Anne Frank House and the Rijksmuseum weeks ahead, walk the canals early or late, and look both ways for bikes before you step into any lane that looks like pavement.
The honest verdict
Amsterdam is flat, small and easy to walk, but its two biggest sights sell out and its canal-house hotels have steep stairs and no lifts. The trips that go wrong are the ones that arrive at the Anne Frank House without a ticket, book a room up four flights with two large bags, or step into a bike lane. Four clusters cover a first visit; Haarlem, Zaanse Schans and the bulb fields are day trips from one kept bed.
You will like
- Flat streets and canals
- Museums close together
- Cafés and street markets
What wears you down
- Summer crowds in the centre
- Bikes in every lane
- High hotel prices

- 5 days

Three mistakes to avoid
- Unlicensed taxis at Schiphol or Centraal quoting a flat fare: use the official rank, a booked ride or the train.(Scams)
- Anne Frank House and other memorials: keep voices low and follow the no-photo rules.(Survive · red lines)
- Bikes, scooters and trams: look both ways before every crossing and never stand in a bike lane.(Survive · safety)
Money and SIM
- Budget day
- €50–90 (≈ US$60–110) excl. bed
- Paying
- Cards and phone payments are the norm; some places do not take cash at all. Carry one debit or credit card that works abroad.
- Cash
- Many places take cards only; keep €20 (≈ US$25) in coins and small notes and withdraw at bank ATMs.
- SIM
- eSIM bought before you fly: Works the moment you land; no counter or queue.
Etiquette: the top three
- Bikes
- Never walk or stand in a bike lane (usually red asphalt); look both ways even on a one-way street.
- Coffeeshops
- Cannabis stays inside the licensed coffeeshop; do not smoke it on the street or mix it with alcohol.
- De Wallen
- Do not photograph window workers; treat the area as a place people live and work, not a spectacle.
