Best tours in Amsterdam: walking, food and day tours

Amsterdam rewards two kinds of tour: the short guided walk that explains what you are looking at, and the boat that shows the city from the water. Everything else is optional.

For a first visit, take a 2-hour walking tour of the Canal Ring and Jordaan in the morning, when streets are quiet and the guide can talk. Then book a small open boat for the evening golden hour: the same canals, fewer boats, better light. Both are cheap enough to do on day one and they make the rest of the trip easier to navigate.

Day tours make sense for places where the transfer is the annoying part: Zaanse Schans windmills, Volendam and Marken fishing villages, or Keukenhof in April and May. If you are comfortable with Dutch trains, most of these are doable independently for less; the tour buys you time and commentary, not access.

Walking tours usually run twice a day, mid-morning and mid-afternoon, and last about two hours. Tip-based tours run on a fixed schedule and ask for a cash or card tip at the end. Canal cruises depart from several points along the ring, roughly 09:00 to 22:00, with the last boats around 21:30 (check).

Museum-guided visits follow the museum's own opening hours, typically 09:00–17:00, with the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum open later one evening a week (check). Day tours leave between 08:00 and 10:00 and return in the late afternoon or early evening.

Group size is the main thing your money buys. A 12-person walk costs more than a 30-person one and is worth it in the narrow streets of the Jordaan. For boats, an open electric boat with 8–12 seats beats a glass-roofed 60-seat cruiser on a warm evening.

Most tours meet in the centre, within a 10–20 minute walk of Centraal Station or a short tram ride. Meeting points are usually on Dam Square, at the Westerkerk, or at a canal-side jetty near the Anne Frank House. Confirm the exact spot the day before; several jetties sit within 200 m of each other.

From Schiphol, trains run to Amsterdam Centraal roughly every 10 minutes and take about 15–20 minutes (check). If your tour starts before 09:00, allow an extra 30 minutes for the walk from the station.

For day tours, pickup is often at a central hotel or a coach bay near the station. Independent travellers reach Zaanse Schans by train to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans plus a short walk, and Keukenhof by bus from Schiphol or Leiden in season (check).
