Ammanford
Rhydaman
Base here only if you have a car and want the Black Mountain and Carmarthenshire valleys: 1 night, half a day in town, the rest outdoors.
Ammanford is a small former coal town in the Amman Valley, 5 miles from the end of the M4 on the A483, with a population of about 5,400. The town itself is a half-day: the Miners' Memorial on Quay Street, a market street and a couple of pubs. Its real value is as a cheap, quiet base for the western Brecon Beacons, Carreg Cennen and the gardens at Aberglasney and the National Botanic Garden of Wales. The Heart of Wales Line gives a car-free option, but slowly.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Rural roads are narrow, hedged and often single-track: drive slowly and expect tractors.
- Many valley pubs and cafés close early and some shut on Mondays: check before you drive out.
- Phone signal is patchy in the upper Amman Valley and on the Black Mountain.
- Weather changes fast on the hills: carry waterproofs even on a clear morning.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are rural driving on narrow roads, fast-changing hill weather and early closing times that leave you without food or a lift.
