Amersfoort
Give Amersfoort one full day and one night as a stop between Amsterdam and Utrecht: the medieval centre is walkable in 3 hours and the station is a 10-minute walk from it.
Amersfoort is a compact medieval city 14 minutes by train from Utrecht and 33 minutes from Amsterdam, with a circular old centre, two surviving city gates and a 98 m church tower. It works as a half-day stop on the Amsterdam–Utrecht–Berlin rail line or as a quieter base for the Utrecht province, and most visitors see the centre on foot in a few hours.

Get around
The old centre is small enough to walk end to end in about 20 minutes; the station is a 10-minute walk from it. City buses run but not often; outside the centre a rented bike is the fastest option. Car access to the centre is restricted, so park in one of the garages on the ring and walk in.
