Ambarawa
Give Ambarawa one night, or a half-day stop between Semarang and Yogyakarta: the railway museum and Rawa Pening views are the reason to come.
Ambarawa is a small highland town at the junction of Semarang, Salatiga and Magelang, sitting beside Rawa Pening lake between Mount Ungaran, Telomoyo and Merbabu. It is cooler than Semarang and its main draw is the Indonesian Railway Museum, plus the old diesel train ride toward Tuntang. Most travellers see it as a stop on the Semarang–Yogyakarta road, not a base.

Get around
Angkot (shared minibuses) run fixed colour-coded routes through town for about Rp5,000–10,000 cash, paid on arrival. Ojek (motorcycle taxis) wait at pangkalan stops; agree the price first. Go-Jek and Grab both work here with fixed app prices. Becak and delman wait near the railway museum entrance. Walking is fine for short hops but pavements are narrow and midday heat is real.

- The steam train to Bedono runs only on limited dates: book ahead or you will miss it.
Ambarawa is a low-crime small town; the real risks are scooter traffic, narrow pavements, midday heat and rainy-season flooding near the lake. Use app taxis or agree fares before you ride.
