Amarante
Give Amarante one night, or a half-day stop between Porto and the Douro: the bridge, monastery and riverbank are done in 3–4 hours on foot.
Amarante is a small Tâmega river town about 1 hour from Porto by bus, known for the São Gonçalo bridge, the monastery that holds his tomb, and a June festival that fills every room. The historic centre is compact and closed to most cars, so you walk it. Most travellers see it as a stop on the Porto–Douro run; one night is enough, two if you want the water park or golf.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek socially; handshake in business; avoid: Hugging strangers
- Language: Start with 'bom dia' or 'boa tarde'; avoid: Assuming Spanish will do
- Queues: Wait your turn; take a ticket at pharmacies and post offices; avoid: Pushing onto trams
- Titles: Use 'senhor' and 'senhora' and professional titles ('Doutor'); avoid: First names with older people until invited

Scams and watch-outs
- No train service: arrive by bus or car.
- Parking in the centre is limited; leave the car outside and walk.
- The first weekend of June festival fills hotels and streets — book months ahead.
- Museum and church hours change; check before you go.
A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are riverbank slips after rain, summer heat, and driving in when the centre is packed. Standard precautions apply.
