Alvor
Base here 3–5 nights if you want a walkable fishing village with a beach and estuary, not a resort strip: Alvor is small, flat and quiet by 23:00.
Alvor is a former fishing village in the municipality of Portimão, on the western Algarve, sitting between the Ria de Alvor estuary and Praia dos Três Irmãos. The old centre is a few lanes of low houses around the parish church and the castle ruins; the beach and the 3 km boardwalk are a 10–15 minute walk away. It works as a base for the western Algarve by car or bus, and as a quieter alternative to Albufeira or Praia da Rocha. Two nights covers the village and the beach; four or five lets you add Lagos, the Monchique hills and a boat trip without rushing.

Get around
The village is walkable in 15 minutes end to end; the beach and boardwalk are 10–15 minutes on foot from the centre. Local Vamus Algarve buses link Alvor with Portimão (town, train station and beaches) and with Lagos and Albufeira on the coastal lines; buy tickets on board. A car helps for the rest of the western Algarve. Taxis and ride-hailing cover Portimão and the airport run.

Scams and watch-outs
- Many harbour restaurants are cash-only: carry euros or check before you sit.
- The beach has no lifeguard cover outside the summer season, and the Atlantic here has strong currents and cold water.
- Parking in the old centre is tight in July and August; use the edge-of-village car parks.
- The boardwalk crosses a nature reserve: stay on the path and keep dogs out of the dunes.
- Some hotels and restaurants close or cut hours from November to February.
Alvor is a low-crime village and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are the sea (currents, cold water, no lifeguards off-season), sunburn, and cash-only restaurants.
