Alofi
Niue is a hire-car island: pick up the car at the airport, base on the west coast, do the sea tracks and reef pools at low tide in the morning, and treat Sunday as a day off.
Niue has one main road, one town and a handful of places to stay, so there is no route to optimise: the trip is the flight days, the tide and Sunday. Four small areas around Alofi cover a first stay; the sea tracks, the east-coast chasms and the whale trips are drives or boat launches from one kept bed.

01Talava Arches
A limestone arch and cave system at the north tip of the island, reached by a long forest track and a steep chain-assisted descent: only for a fit, sure-footed visitor with a full morning, closed shoes and a torch, not a stop to fit between other things.
02Togo Chasm
A walk across bare, jagged coral pinnacles on the south-east coast to a sand-floored chasm reached down a wooden ladder: go in closed shoes with water and sun cover, allow a full morning or afternoon, and do not rush the pinnacle crossing.
03Matapa Chasm
A calm swimming chasm a short drive north of town, once the freshwater washing pool for the villages above: go at mid to low tide in calm weather, swim in the still pool rather than the open channel to the sea, and bring reef shoes for the sharp coral edge.
04Alofi wharf and harbour
The island's harbour and the launch point for whale and dive trips: go at first light or late afternoon for the boats coming and going; free, and easy to combine with breakfast.
05Avaiki Cave
The old landing place just north of the wharf, where a limestone cave opens onto a small sea pool: go at low tide for the calmest pool and the best light into the cave mouth, and treat the descent as a short scramble rather than a walk.
06Huanaki Cultural Centre and Museum
A short museum stop in Alofi: allow 45 minutes for the island's history and crafts, on a weekday morning; check that it is open before you go, and skip it on Sunday.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Sunday: Treat it as a genuine day of rest across the island: avoid loud activity, swimming or boating near villages, and expect almost everything to be closed.
- Villages and churches: Dress modestly when passing through or visiting; swimwear is for the sea and the resort, not the village street.
- Sea tracks: Many cross family or village land: follow any signage, pay a marked access fee if one is posted, and stay on the track.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people, and treat sites with cultural or historical weight (such as Avaiki) with the same quiet you would a church.
- Pace: The island runs slowly and so should you: greet people you pass, do not rush a conversation at a shop counter, and expect opening hours to be approximate.
