Alnmouth

Base here 1–2 nights for the beach and coast path, not as a sightseeing hub: the village is small and the station sits 1.5 miles away.

Alnmouth is a small coastal village at the mouth of the River Aln in Northumberland, about 25 minutes by train from Newcastle. It works as a quiet 1–2 night base for the beach, the Northumberland Coast Path and day trips to Alnwick, Warkworth and Lindisfarne, rather than a destination with a long list of sights. Most visitors come between spring and early autumn; the village is tiny, so book beds and dinner tables ahead in summer.

Get around

The village is walkable end to end in about 10 minutes. Arriva X18 links Alnmouth with Hipsburn (for the station) and Alnwick, and four buses a day continue up the coast to Craster, Seahouses and Berwick. The railway station is 1.5 miles west in Hipsburn. Knights Taxi and Alnwick-based firms cover short hops. There is no ferry across the river to Church Hill; the river can be forded for roughly two hours either side of low tide, otherwise it is a four-mile walk via the bridge and coast path.

Sleep

Northumberland Street and village centre: Pubs, cafés and most B&Bs within a few minutes' walk of the beach; best for a short stay without a car.
Marine Road and the golf-course edge: Quieter, close to the beach and the lower golf course; a 5–10 minute walk back to the village.
Hipsburn and the station area: Practical if you arrive late by train, but 1.5 miles from the beach and village.

Language

English everywhere, with strong regional accents and vocabulary; Welsh and Gaelic appear on signs and in some communities but you will never need them. Visitors mostly trip over words, not accents.

Useful words: 'loo' toilet, 'queue' line, 'lift' elevator, 'pavement' sidewalk, 'return' round-trip ticket, 'cheers' thanks.
'First floor' is one above the ground floor.
