Almaty is a park-and-mountain city: cathedral and Panfilov Park in the morning, museums indoors at midday, Kök Tobe at sunset, and Medeu on a clear day with a weather margin.
Almaty's centre is flat and green, but the city is spread out and the mountains set the plan. The trips that go wrong are the ones that ignore season and weather: winter ice and smog, summer heat at noon, and mountain roads or cable cars closed by wind and snow. Four clusters cover a first visit; Charyn Canyon and the lakes are trips away from one kept bed. Many flights land at night, so the airport-to-bed leg matters.

Etiquette
- Cathedral and mosque: Cover shoulders and knees at Zenkov Cathedral; cover shoulders, arms and hair and remove shoes at Central Mosque.
- Shoes: Off at the mosque and in most homes; look for a shoe rack or a pile of shoes at the door.
- Greetings: A handshake is standard between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand first. Elders are greeted and seated first.
- Tipping: Not automatic at cafés or stalls; round up drivers; about 5–10% in sit-down restaurants without a service charge.
- Hospitality: If invited to share tea or food, it is polite to accept at least a small amount; refusing outright can read as rude.
- Photos: Never photograph government buildings, soldiers, or police up close. Ask before photographing people, especially at the bazaar or the mosque.
- Toasts: If you are at a table with alcohol and toasts begin, a short toast back is appreciated even if you are not drinking — say so and raise water instead.
