Almaty by district
The visitable centre is a grid a few kilometres across, tilted toward the mountains: Panfilov Park and the pedestrian streets in the north-centre, Republic Square and the government quarter to the south-west, Kök Tobe hill rising south-east of the centre, and the Medeu valley a separate mountain excursion further south-east again. 'Up' (south) is toward the mountains; 'down' (north) is toward the plain.
