Alix
Skip as a base: 2–3 hours covers the gator statue, wagon-wheel museum and lake. Sleep in Red Deer (40 min) unless you want the campground.
Alix is a village of about 830 people on the Central Corridor east of Red Deer, at the junction of Highways 12 and 611. Its draw is small and specific: a mascot statue, a volunteer-run pioneer museum, a lake with a campground, and a nine-hole golf course. It works as a half-day break on the drive between Red Deer and Stettler, or as a cheap camping night, not as a multi-day destination.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport: without a car you are stranded.
- The Wagon Wheel Museum runs May–August, Tuesday–Saturday 10:00–17:00; outside those months you must phone ahead to arrange a visit.
- Campgrounds and the golf course are seasonal; confirm dates before driving out.
- Winter driving on Highway 12 and 611: black ice and drifting snow are common.
Very low crime; the real risks are highway driving, winter weather and long distances between services. Tell someone your route if you drive back roads at night.
