Aliwal North
Skip unless you need a hot-springs stop on the N6 between Bloemfontein and the Eastern Cape coast: half a day for the spa, then drive on.
Aliwal North is a small farming town on the Orange River, best known for its two mineral hot springs at Aliwal Spa. The spa has been renovated after years of decline, but the town itself has little else for a traveller. Use it as a lunch-and-soak break on the N6, not a destination.
