Aliso Viejo
Treat Aliso Viejo as a 1-night car base for Aliso and Wood Canyons and Laguna Beach, not a sightseeing town: 20 min to the coast, 25 min to Irvine.
Aliso Viejo is a small inland Orange County city in the San Joaquin Hills, 47,823 people, built around offices, the Aliso Viejo Town Center and Soka University. Almost nobody comes here for the city itself: it works as a quieter, cheaper bed base for Laguna Beach and the canyon trails, and you need a car for everything. One night covers the trails and the coast; two nights if you add Irvine or Disneyland.

Get around
You need a car. The city is spread over hills with no useful bus grid; rideshares work but surge at commuter hours. Parking is free almost everywhere. The 73 toll road is the fast link to Irvine and the coast; the I-5 at El Toro Rd is the free but slower option.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Canyon trails close at sunset and are closed on red-flag fire days: check OC Parks before driving out.
- Summer afternoons inland run 5–8 °C hotter than Laguna Beach; hike early.
- The 73 is a toll road with no cash booths: you need a transponder or you get billed by plate.
- Nothing is walkable between the Town Center and the hotels on Vantis: plan on driving even for dinner.
Very safe by US city standards; the real risks are canyon heat, rattlesnakes on trails, and driving the 73 or I-5 at rush hour. Lock the car and leave nothing visible at trailheads.
