Alijó
Base in Pinhão, not Alijó town: 2 nights for the Douro line, a quinta tasting and the Casal de Loivos viewpoint. Skip if you only want Porto.
Alijó is the municipality; Pinhão, 20 km south on the Douro, is where you actually sleep, eat and board the boat. This is the middle of the Alto Douro Wine Region, the world's oldest demarcated wine area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come for the river, the terraced slopes and the train line, not for a town of sights. Two nights is the working minimum; one night only works if you arrive by car and leave by car.

Get around
Pinhão is small enough to walk. For quintas and viewpoints outside the village you need a car, a taxi from the station, or a guided tour. The Douro Line train runs along the river to Régua and Pocinho; the Pinhão–Pocinho stretch is the scenic one. Buses link Alijó and Pinhão but are few and not built around sightseeing.

- Summer afternoons hit 38 °C+ in the valley; walk and taste before 11:00 or after 17:00.
- Village restaurants and shops shut early; eat before 21:00 or check the kitchen is still open.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the side valleys — download offline maps.
Very safe for tourists; the real risks are the N222 and N323 river roads (bends, no lighting, wine at lunch), summer heat in the valley, and river swimming where the current and depth are not marked.
