Before you start
Welcome to the El Hamma audio walk in Algiers. 3 stops: Martyrs' Memorial (Maqam Echahid), Jardin d'Essai (botanical garden) and Bardo National Museum (prehistory and ethnography). Museum-and-garden cluster in the south-east: go by car, spend one morning between the Martyrs' Memorial and the Jardin d'Essai, and avoid the middle of a hot day.
Martyrs' Memorial (Maqam Echahid) east to the Jardin d'Essai and the Fine Arts Museum — a car-served cluster, not a walk from the centre. Underfoot: paved, park paths; slope: gentle; shade: medium.
Algiers rises from its bay in three visible layers, and each one has its own century. The Casbah's Ottoman lanes climb the steep hillside above the port; French colonial boulevards ring the centre below and around it; and a newer, harder-edged city spreads south-east along the coast toward the memorial and the garden.
Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Martyrs' Memorial (Maqam Echahid)
مقام الشهيد
Stop 1 of 3: Martyrs' Memorial (Maqam Echahid). Arrival point: Memorial plaza, by car from the centre.
The three-leaf concrete memorial on the hill above El Hamma, with a museum beneath and a wide city view: go by car and give it half a morning.
Two national holidays anchor the secular calendar: 1 November, marking the start of the 1954 revolution, brings official ceremonies to the Martyrs' Memorial; 5 July, Independence Day, marks the end of French rule in 1962 with flags across the city.
Respect the memorial: dress modestly, no loud behaviour, no drones. Quiet on weekday mornings; busy on national holidays. Shoes on.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Jardin d'Essai (botanical garden). It's about 12 minutes on foot. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

حديقة التجارب
Stop 2 of 3: Jardin d'Essai (botanical garden). Arrival point: Main gate on the Hamma avenue side.
A large colonial-era botanical garden in El Hamma: shade and long avenues, best after the memorial and before the afternoon heat.
Stay on the paths and follow park signs. Families arrive at weekends; weekday mornings are calm. Ask before photographing people.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Bardo National Museum (prehistory and ethnography). It's about 15 minutes on foot. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

3. Bardo National Museum (prehistory and ethnography)
المتحف الوطني للآثار ما قبل التاريخ والإثنوغرافيا (باردو)
Stop 3 of 3: Bardo National Museum (prehistory and ethnography). Arrival point: Boulevard Franklin Roosevelt gate, by car.
A former Ottoman-era country villa turned prehistory and ethnography museum: rock art casts, Saharan and Kabyle craft, and a quiet courtyard — a car ride from El Hamma, worth a slow hour, not a rushed one.
Ask before photographing exhibits with a flash; some rooms restrict photography. Quiet on weekday mornings; school groups some weekday afternoons.
