How to get to Algeria: airports, flights and border crossings

Fly into Algiers (ALG) for a first trip: it has the most connections from Europe and the shortest transfer to the Casbah and central coast. Choose Oran (ORN) only if you are heading west, or Constantine (CLE) for the east. Land borders and ferries are unreliable — check before planning around them.

Which airport and route by passport

Algiers is the default arrival point for almost every first trip. It has the widest schedule, the most onward domestic flights and the shortest run into the city. Pick a different airport only when your itinerary is clearly regional: Oran for the west coast, Constantine for the east and the Roman sites at Djemila and Timgad, and the southern airports (Djanet, Tamanrasset, Ghardaïa) only as part of an agency-arranged Sahara block.

Airports that matter

Houari Boumediene Airport (ALG) sits about 20 km east of central Algiers. A taxi or transfer takes roughly 20–40 minutes depending on traffic; there is also a rail link to the city (check current service). This is the airport to use for the Casbah, Notre-Dame d'Afrique and Tipasa.

Oran Es Sénia (ORN) serves the west and the raï music scene. Constantine Mohamed Boudiaf (CLE) is the practical base for the east and for day trips to Djemila and Timgad.

Southern airports — Ghardaïa, Djanet, Tamanrasset, Timimoun — are served by domestic flights and are normally booked as part of a licensed Sahara tour. Do not plan to arrive there independently and find a guide on the ground.

  • ALG — Algiers: best all-round gateway
  • ORN — Oran: west coast
  • CLE — Constantine: east and Roman sites
  • Ghardaïa, Djanet, Tamanrasset: Sahara, agency-arranged

Flights and what they cost

Algeria has no nonstop service from North America, Australia or New Zealand, so every long-haul route connects through Europe, Turkey or the Gulf. From Europe the trip is short: Paris, Marseille, Barcelona or Rome to Algiers is a couple of hours. Fares swing widely by season; as a 2026 estimate, a return from a European hub is often in the €150–400 range, and from the US roughly US$700–1,200 return.

Book early for the April–June and September–November windows, which are the most comfortable for travel and the busiest for flights. August is hot and crowded with diaspora travel; January is quiet but cold and wet on the coast.

Land borders and ferries

Algeria's land borders open and close with little notice. The crossing to Tunisia has operated at times; the border with Morocco has been closed for years; the Mauritanian crossing in the far south is remote and needs permits. Treat any land arrival as uncertain and confirm status close to your date — do not build a tight itinerary around it.

Ferries link Algiers and Oran with Marseille, Alicante and Tunis. Schedules are seasonal and sparse, and sailings can be cancelled. If you take a ferry, allow a buffer day on each side.

  • Do not assume a land border is open. Check with your embassy or the Algerian consulate before travelling to a crossing.
  • Southern border areas need permits and an authorised guide.

On arrival: money, SIM, transfers

Algeria is a cash economy. Change some money at the airport or a bank in town, and keep dinars for taxis, small hotels and tips. Cards work in some larger hotels but not widely.

Buy a local SIM at the airport or in Algiers if you want data; coverage is good in cities and patchy in the Sahara. Arrange an airport transfer or agree the taxi fare before you get in — meters are not always used.

  • Cash: change money on arrival; cards are limited
  • SIM: airport or city shop; passport needed
  • Transfer: pre-book or fix the fare first
  • Checkpoints: carry your passport and visa

When to fly

The coast is best from April to June and September to November. The Sahara runs October to March. Ramadan shifts dates each year and changes opening hours and transport; check the calendar if it overlaps your trip. Domestic flights to the south fill up in the Sahara season, so book those legs early.
