Alexandrov is a former royal residence 2 h by train from Moscow, where Ivan the Terrible ruled Russia from 1564 to 1581. The Alexandrova sloboda convent holds the 1513 Trinity Cathedral and the first hip-roof church in Russia. The rest of the town is ordinary, so most travellers come as a day trip or a stop on the Yaroslavl line.
