Alert Bay
Go for one night, not a day trip: the ferry eats 3–4 h of your day and the U'mista museum and Big House deserve an unhurried morning.
Alert Bay is a village of about 450 people on Cormorant Island, off northern Vancouver Island, in Kwakwaka'wakw territory. More than half the residents are First Nations and more than half the island is reserve land. You come for the U'mista Cultural Centre, the Big House and the totem poles, not for a resort. The island is small and walkable; the ferry from Port McNeill takes about 35–40 minutes.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No bridge: you arrive by BC Ferries from Port McNeill or Sointula, or by light aircraft.
- Ferry sailings are limited (about six a day) and the last one leaves in the evening: check the timetable before you book a bed.
- Some businesses and the museum run seasonal hours; winter visits can find things shut.
- This is a living First Nations community, not a theme park: ask before photographing people, ceremonies or private property, and follow signage in the Big House area.
- Cell and data coverage is patchy; download maps and tickets before you cross.
Very low crime; the real risks are weather, slippery boardwalks and the ferry timetable. Walk the village by day, carry a light at night, and treat the Big House and burial sites with respect.
