Aleppo is Syria's largest city, in the country's north near the Turkish border. Its Old City and its medieval citadel are a UNESCO World Heritage site, but large parts of the historic centre, including sections of the Great Mosque and the covered souks, were heavily damaged during the civil war (the city changed hands several times between 2012 and 2016). Reconstruction is ongoing and access to different quarters varies; this listing is informational rather than a recommendation to travel.

  • Check your own government's travel advisory before you go; many governments have long advised against travel to Syria, and conditions in Aleppo remain especially fluid after years of front-line fighting.
  • Unexploded ordnance and structurally unsound buildings remain a risk in some damaged districts: stay on cleared, well-used routes and do not enter ruined buildings.
  • Banking, card payments and ATMs are unreliable; carry cash and expect limited international card acceptance.
  • Power, water, mobile signal and internet access can be intermittent: confirm with your accommodation rather than assuming normal city services.
