Alcobaça is a small inland town in the Oeste whose whole case rests on one building: the 12th-century Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria, a UNESCO site and the burial place of Pedro I and Inês de Castro. The town around it is quiet, the river runs through the middle, and the coast at São Martinho do Porto is 20 minutes away by car. Most travellers see the monastery as a stop between Óbidos and Nazaré and sleep elsewhere.

- In summer the monastery square fills with coach groups mid-morning; go at opening or after 15:00.
Alcobaça is a low-risk small town; the real issues are unlit roads outside the centre at night, summer forest-fire risk in the surrounding pine hills, and pickpockets only in the monastery square in high season.
